Rear window shattered by itself

Hey everyone

So on Monday, my rear window basically imploded without warning. I had closed my passenger side door and my rear window shattered. There was no vandalism (it's a gated, secure parking lot) and I literally have no idea why it happened. I called up my Subaru dealership but they said they wouldn't touch it, I had to go through insurance. Clearly there had to be something wrong with the glass or the car itself. I am getting the glass replaced right now (luckily my insurance has a $0 glass deductible, not that I wanted to even use them). Hopefully it does not happen again.

Has this happened to anyone else? Just curious if there is a flaw with the car that caused it to happen.

Holy, that's nuts.

I always lightly shut my doors, my dad got me started with that habit when he first got his Camry.

He always said "son, this is a toyota, it's made much better than the American garbage you're used to"

I would be very surprised if there wasn't something that hit the window to compromise the integrity (you may not have ever noticed it, or it happened recently). The door closing just gave it that little extra pressure to make it finally pop.

...or maybe it really is defective.

Have had it happen with other cars. To be so uniform it was likely due to twisting but that is just a guess at best. Have you modded anything in the suspension?

Something very well could have hit it. it was a very blustery day, and when I was at work, was parked under a highway overpass so something could have fell and hit it. I just didn't see any evidence of it.

It's on factory suspension and 16" wheels with snow tires. Another scenario that has run through my head is that I hit a nasty pothole that cracked the glass, and when I closed it a couple times it finally gave out.

That is exactly what happened with my one Lancer.

Tempered glass can be funny like that...

If it had an impact sometime prior to this, it might not have broken (visibly anyway) but then the next small vibration/hit/etc would cause it to shatter since the tempered part was ready to give in.

Did you have anything stuck on the inside of the window via a suction cup? I know someone who had a small flag on via a suction up, and some how that with the use of the rear defroster weakened that spot, and eventually made the glass implode.
