BRZ shift gear indicator wants you to shift gears too soon?
I have set up my BRZ to show me which gear am i when driving. Im sure that you guys have notice that small up arrow that blinks to you can shift gears, i guess this is done to maximize fuel economy.
However i feel like the up arrow wants me to shift too soon. For example as soon as the tac is getting closer to 2k rpm the up arrow blinks asking to change gears... So sometimes, i can be in like 6th gear and only by at 40mph... Im not sure if its right or wrong for the engine/transmission.. Do you guys think that that up arrow wants you to shift too soon? If not what is you average rpm before shifting to next gear? |

Hmm... I don't know too much but when I was taught to drive manual, I was informed that shifting between 2-2.5k rpm is the most efficient. That's how I usually shifted in my BMW before getting the BRZ so I never thought too much of it.

That little arrow wants to maximize efficiency, so it may encourage you to shift earlier than you typically would. That should generally be fine as long as you're not going up a hill or in some other scenario that would cause the engine to bog down.
Anecdotal evidence, but I did notice an average MPG increase when I started making a conscious effort to shift when it tells me to (when I'm not hooning, of course).

As codesplice mentioned this is a efficiency shift light. It's trying to help you get the best MPG. Like always with driving a car use your best judgement. If your RPM's are low and you need to get over a lane in front of someone you won't be in the best position to do so. Their will be times when that suggested RPM level is lower then what you want to be in.

Honestly, do people actually use this function? This was the first thing I disabled.
Just play it by ear folks. |

The arrow doesn't usually light up until you're at a speed where you won't bog the next gear. If the computer senses you're going up a hill or accelerating, it shouldn't light up the arrow (at least I haven't seen it)

So in the manual the arrow is for efficiency? I would have assumed it worked like the arrow in the auto did. If I have no arrow, it means that a shift would put the engine below idle speed and in the auto it just won't do the shift.

We're not talking about the adjustable shift light/bip here. We're talking the small arrow near the gear indicator.

If you are going to follow the arrow for gear changes, you will be driving the car like it was not meant to be. The arrows are meant to keep you rolling along smoothly with the best efficiency.
I tried it during the break in period. Very soon you will feel the car asking you to ignore it. Try it if you want the experience. You will not stick on to using it for long. Or you could just let it blink as you smile and rev all the way through it! |

I know this .. You can disable the gear indicator entirely on the brz limited by scrolling through a few options and selecting "G-OFF", which also disables the shift up indicator. No need for that crap. |

I find that if I fallow that arrow when accelerating, eventually it will put me in 6th too soon and the engine will bog

Ya I know wut u mean, a lot time I see it wants me to shift at like 2k rpm so i will end up sitting at 1.5k rpm at next gear. Usually i just ignore it....... and rev it till at least 2500.
I don't feel our car like anything below 2k unless u are in 1st gear. *ON the side note, the timing of rev indicator changes with ur driving habbit too. Last edited by chaoskaze; 03-18-2015 at 01:47 PM. |
