Tesla banned from being sold in multiple states

I didn't know it was fair play to get legislative acts against other car companies. So if GM wants to play fair then who's with me in coming up with a bill that says if you've had a record number of recalls this year alone then you cannot sell these cars in x states due to safety concerns...

And the sad part is that the rule the other companies are using doesn't even really apply to Tesla. That rule says that manufacturers cannot sell in competition with their dealers. So, Chevrolet the company couldn't open its own store right down the road from John Doe Chevrolet. Since Tesla doesn't have any franchised or outside dealers, there's no one for them to even compete with and the law doesn't apply. But the other companies are scared of the threat of new technology and are trying whatever they can to squash it.

The day I can order a new car and obtain it without hassle will be a beautiful day.

*insert rant about my generation not buying new cars because my anecdotal dealership experience is terrible*

The new car franchise system is like the automotive mafia in most states. They have truckloads of money and own the politicians. They protect their turf like the best of the major crime families. Some of the hoops that GM had to jump through when trying to eliminate dealerships as part of their restructuring were epic examples of insanity. I have very little sympathy for these "networks". I hope Tesla fights this and brings about the beginning of the end for this corruption.

Would this be considered a display of fascism? Totally overruling the free market for personal interest?

Tesla and CARB are no better. The only reason Tesla turns a profit is because of CARB and the other Nazi states that adopted the CARB credits program.

I know it is really popular to hate GM on import forums but I must have missed something in this story. How is the Tesla bans GM's fault?

The way I read the story it is the Dealers Associations that are lobbying for the Tesla bans. This includes dealers who sell for all major manufacturers including GM, Ford, Chrysler, VW, (gasp) Toyota, Subaru, Honda, etc etc etc.

Not dealerships, General Motors itself campaigned for the most recent bill:

Edit: As to why we bailed out GM, our society is controlled by a short sighted generation more concerned with paying off their mortgage and buying their mid-life-crisis car/boat/jetski/trophy wife than investing in education, healthcare, R&D, and in general, future stability at the cost of some short term pain and eventual change.

Thanks, I had not seen the C&D article. It still points out that the Dealer Associations are the one behind it. GM supports it because they are forced to sell through the dealership mafia and pay all the fees and follow the restrictions imposed by the association and the state lawmakers who are owned by them. It is one of those "level playing field" things.

Tesla is right in wanting to challenge this on the national level rather than state by state. They are likely to stand a better chance at that level where politicians have been singing the virtues of electric and hybrid technology. It will be more difficult for those same politicians to now oppose the public's ease of access to that technology.

Tesla will either have to win there or choose to play the game by setting up franchised dealership and paying the Dealership Association mafia their dues.

GM already killed the electric car once and they'd love nothing more than to do it again.

In 1991 my classmates and I built a hybrid electric truck out of a 3/4 ton pickup. Using airplane junkyard parts and a snow mobile motor we were able to get that truck to do 500 miles at 85 mph on 5 gallons of gas.

We were in high school.

100 miles per gallon.

3/4 ton pickup.

Fuck GM.

Gas is pretty cheap considering you're buying liquid explosive dinosaurs.

These dealers are cowards. If you think your model is so great, go toe to toe with them and let the free market decide.
