Can anyone elaborate on Openflash Tablet "improved drivability"?

I recently became the proud owner of a '14 BRZ Limited (MT) and I'm already looking for little things I can add to the car. Except for small cosmetic details the car is bone stock. The first relatively big-ticket items on my radar are Tom's tails and an Openflash Tablet.

I don't have access to E85 fuel, and I don't have any imminent plans for FI or exhaust mods. The thing that interests me the most about the OFT is the claim that it "improves drivability." Most of the posts I've found on OFT tunes focus more on the gains, so I'm having trouble finding details on how they improve drivability.

What I have in mind, specifically, is the awkwardness of the 1-2 ans 2-3 shifts. If there is one beef I have with the car, it's that I can't shift quickly between those gears; if I try to get on the throttle immediately after the shift, there's a split second delay before the power kicks in. This leads to some really jerky shifts unless I pause before getting on the gas... which is what I've learned to do but I'm not very happy about it. It's only seems to happen during the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts.

So what exactly does the "improved drivability" of the OFT offer? And does it happen to address the "issue" I'm describing?

Many thanks in advance.

I can say that on a stock car

It idles smoother
low down torque and "smothness" is improved below 3000 rpm
Torque dip (4000 rpm) is less

The cold shifting issue from 1st-2nd appears to be gearbox related and "fixed" with transmission oil change

I do find the car is better and smoother on the tune rather than stock mapping.

Thanks for the feedback, Steve. I'm almost certain the issue I'm experiencing isn't the cold shifting issue, but everything you're saying the tune provides sounds awesome.

I have the same feeling/experience with OFT.

Yep is only the first shift in the morning.

Just don't expect huge hp gains think it about 10-15 over stock. But is definitely a smoother drive over stock.

You need the bolt on bits and/or E85 for significant gains

Yeah, like I said, the gains aren't my primary interest in tuning.

we just had a dyno day with 20 cars over the weekend.

there is one car with similar mods as mine but he has a catless header running OFT Stg 2 while I am running stock header on Stg1.

his peak power is only 3kw higher than mine but his torque curve is much stronger across the whole rev range.

I only have one significant driving day with my OFT and in all honesty, my butt dyno didn't register any gains. That being said, it honestly feels like a much more refined car with stage 1 on 91 octane. Throttle response is improved considerably. It idles smoother and the torque dip is not nearly as big of a factor. Also, there's a mountain route I like to take for a fun drive on a nice day and I've driven it quite a few times in my FR-S since purchase but when I drove it after the stage 1 flash I noticed that the vehicle was much more tail happy in turns. I think the 10-15 extra foot pounds of torque in the dip area are the culprit there. Lastly, I can't seem to wrap my head around it and the mechanic/engineer in me can't seem to justify the claim but I swear the gearbox shifts smoother now........maybe it's in my head but maybe it also has something to do with how the engine responds when the clutch is depressed and the way this affects syncro engagement? No clue really but it's definitely not just in my head.

Also, I noticed an immediate drop in the average MPG based on the trip computer's readout. Could be a factor of many things (Including my increased penchant for stomping on the gas with the new tune) but it's there so I feel like I should at least mention it.

Overall, very impressed with OFT and the results. Looking forward to adding an OFH to kill the torque dip completely with stage 2.

+1

Re fuel economy I have an easy run to work each day generally below 3500 and fuel economy appears unchanged in that type of driving. However with more spirited driving I suspect it may be more thirsty , but if you drive like a "nun" (no offense to nuns intended) you can still get same economy

i use to have drivability issues trying to go above 190kph, but now with OFT i have no issues!(infomercial voice) I did 2 full tanks on long distance highway trips and got same gas mileage before, 35-36mpg. and the whole power band seems smoother and dosnt bog down as much down below 2000 rpms. well worth the 500 bucks, easy.

Stock AT, TRD filter which we all know adds about 500 HP.

I've used both the Stage 1 and E85 tune. IMO, the most gains come below 4K, and some additional fun above 5k or so. The 4k or so "torque dip" is a bit better with the OFT tune, but the easy way to avoid that is not drive in the torque dip. Throttle response is more immediate, with less "tip-in" (I think that's the term) or less of a small hesitation when you get hard on the gas. That, too, is easy to avoid by using some smoothness on the gas.

The E85 tune is real fun, though. I could not care less about peak HP, I want torque, and that's what the E85 tune seems to give you via butt-dyno. The overall character of the car does not change at all, it's just a bit more of the same, and I don't mean that in a bad way at all.

As above, it's well worth the money, especially since it's "open source" and so many people are willing to share and you can roll your own.

I was really happy to hear the results of the Dyno day. I would have LOVED to come out there to join in on the fun. I'll be in Sydney in June just in case you guys want to organize another one

cool!! unfortunately we are in Brisbane (1 hour flight from Sydney, right next to the Gold Coast). Do you want to come up too ?? lol

it was a good day and we learnt a lot. around half of us have OFT in different stages of mods.

btw with fuel economy, i have to say it's around 2L/100km less than when i was on ECUTEK canned tunes (same mod spec).
