Local shop licence fee.....

A friend of mine was down in SLC at a shop getting his evo tuned with a new turbo, pretty fun.

While I was there I asked about tuning my brz, two things bothered me. First is that he basically told me it wasn't needed without going FI and second was a $1300 licence fee for using EcuTek plus $500 to for the tune.

Needless to say he won't be tuning my car, but has anyone came across this or can explain the crazy fee??

Sounds like he wanted to profit big from your tune, or have you help fund his software cost, or he wanted to discourage you from wanting a tune from him. I think it's pretty obvious how far out his quote was compared to what other EcuTek tuners are charging.

Pretty sure he wanted you to buy him a 5 pack of licenses AND pay for the tune on top of that. If they are a decent tuner you can ask them to tune you with one of the open source options, but given he wanted you to pay for other peoples licesne files I would suggest to him that his time would better spent attempting to procreate with himself than ripping off potential customers.

Anyone know of a decent tuner in Idaho or Utah?

We used to have Cobb and a few others....

Based on what he said is he wanted to discourage me from getting it tuned so he didn't have to get any of the software.

He was crazy adamant that if Cobb supported my platform that's how I would have to tune.

The whole thing was weird. The shop has good reviews both on the FB page and nasioc. (he did offer that when ecuflash was fully available that he would do it for $500)

But my guess is he's never tuned one and I wouldn't be happy with the results.

Don't be a tuner's first 86. There's a lot to learn coming from the wrx/sti they're usually used to to the 86 (mainly around the whole 'two fuel system' thing), and you don't want them to be learning it all on your car. I made this mistake lol.

Well unless I can get away for a 13hr drive I'm going to have to remote tune unless someone comes up my way for some odd reason and has time to tune lol.

Better to get the etune. I'd rarely say that, but in your case I will.

I want to say drift office and shiv in San Francisco are the closest to me....
Nelsmar in Phoenix is about the same.

Maybe I can get someone's self tune with a little less timing or just cam timing adjustments to the ots map that's already available.

I'm pretty sure he used Borla or some other cheap EL header for the ots (EL stg2 ots)
