Question. Horsepower or Gas Mileage? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

I often read that enthusiasts for the Fr-S/BRZ would like to see more power and torque.

However, I also read that many are quite happy with the gas mileage they're getting, especially so early after initial break-in.

Now, I'm not familiar with what kind of gas mileage the S2000 received but, what would you prefer? 240hp and 170lb ft torque? Or keep it the same with 25-30mpg average on the 6 speed manual?

There are quite a few people who progressed from previous gen MR2s and stepped into this car. The way I see it, I'm getting 28mpg average with spirited driving, but on 60 less horsepower and 600lbs less weight from my Spyder. Others coming from gen II turbos may miss some torque, but it should be well compensated with gas mileage and direct/linear throttle response.

Thoughts?

It's more like cost of car vs. hp.

Subaru could extract more power out of a 2.0l engine (all things being equal) but at what cost?

My S2000 got 19-21mpg average, my WRX gets about the same with 21mpg.

I think the FRS stock is a great mix of economy and performance.

Power, torque, and efficiency are all fine for me. More power would just mean even fewer opportunities to actually use a lot of throttle and a lot of revs.

It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

I get 9 MPG better than I did in my Si -- 39% more miles per each gallon, in an engine with more real world (idle to 3300 RPMs) torque and the same bore and stroke. So that's good too.

This is supposed to be a daily driven sports car.

Good gas milage is a must.

On the Week ends... Pull out the Porche or Big V8 FORD/MOPAR

I definitely agree with that. I believe this ties in with "What do you hate the most on your FR-S?" and "What would you like to see in future model years?"

When the Heya Project was brought up to gather ideas for this car, it was difficult to decipher between fulfilling customer base wishes without exceeding a specific price point.

I just figured that if enthusiasts really wanted more power, they'd go the aftermarket route so that Toyota could stick tho their chassis traditions.
