Scion IQ

The Scion IQ is going to be starting at 16k.....What is Toyota smoking? It has to be some sort of joke. I can only imagine how high a price tag they will slap on the FR-S.

Well it's not necessarily lacking in the feature department...

"iQ buyers get a base model equipped with Pandora integration."

It's not quite at the point of a stipped down chevy aveo, ford fiesta, or honda fit. I don't think this is a sign of an FR-S price bump.

That seems to be directed more towards the Smart fortwo imo, but I think they are pricing themselves too high for that segment.

Maybe it gets good mileage? Why not spend a little more on a civic for that price?

It is interesting to think about a couple things...

This car (in size at least) falls somewhere between a Smart and the Fiat 500. Smart cars start at $12,500 in the US, and at this price point the car comes with no features... not even a radio to power the two speakers it comes with. The Fiat at $500 cheaper has a much more competetive "stock" feature set against the iQ.

How should Scion position this car? Do they compare it against the Smart, which most consumers would do? The issue I see here is that your average consumer looking for a sub-compact would never actually consider a Smart car, because they are cheap little things with POS transmissions. Should the iQ be compared to a car nobody really wants? Or do they position it as a competitor to the Fiat 500's and Mazda2's which are bigger little cars, with equal or better features and options? Everything else in this segment is much more established...

I'm personally interested to see how well these "premium" sub-compacts do in North America.

The one thing I will say for the iQ vs. the Fiat and the Smart, is that it is an absolute blast to drive. I was lucky enough to boot around in our tester, which has the 16" alloys, TRD lowering springs and rear sway bar. Man, that thing is a little go-kart, and it puts a smile on your face. It is the first Toyota product I have driven in a long time that actually has some personality.

The thing is that Toyota should have slotted this under the Yaris/XD, not at the same price point. The Smart is garbage period. I just don't understand the logic in pricing a car in the range of others that are bigger in every way and with the same or more features. Toyota is shooting themselves in the foot with this one.

If it came with a small diesel and got 60 - 80 mpg. Then I would be okay with the pricing. It would be the only sub-compact car sold in the USA with a diesel.

I agree with everyone that says it is over priced. Really this should probably start with a base around $10-11k and then all the extras as options. Hell with the Mazda 2, Ford Fiesta, Nissan Versa, Kia Rio, Kia Soul, Kia Forte, Fiat 500 all start off at the same price or cheaper and offer greater utility and features.

Hell I wouldn't be caught in such a small car on the interstate. If I only had $16k to buy a new car I would look at one of those mentioned above first or even look at the used car market instead of this. This is DOA.

$16k? IDK that sound fishy. Look at xD, iirc that one starts from $16k and a lot bigger. Why they wanna kill themselves to have same price tag in the lot that have bigger space and better feature and etc?

My guess, would be $13k~$14k

But maybe Toyota/Scion are really that far removed from reality that they think this car is worth $16K?

"iQ buyers will also be able to personalize their new micro-cars with both go-fast and look-fast bits, including carbon fiber trim, lowering springs, and of course, subwoofers. The kids love subwoofers."

Looks like Scion is still targeting the teenager demographic! 16K... and no haggle... good luck with that!

A stripped down Yaris is $14,000, so a fully equipped IQ should price out at $16,000. Keep in mind that it's easier to lower price with specials and sales, than to raise the price once you start selling.

Not entirely stripped! :P

I got mine for 14k with power windows+locks, all weather mats and the fancy stuff inside. O_O

Because... well I can haggle!

Haggling isn't always a bad thing. ;p
