Drift-Office : Vortech / Perrin Combo Installed & Tuned!

Hmmm. Indeed. Yes, you're reading it right! Yes, I know, I've not been known to be a pro SC guy for this platform but I figured I'd chime in anyway... (Disclaimer!)

About a month ago, I was pretty eager to do something different when a customer came in wanting to have a SC setup installed on his BRZ. Having armed him with both sides of the equation as I always do with all my customers, he was pretty adamant about having this done. I had no qualms about making sure that I did the best I could for him, but having read all the associated issues that were on this forum, I had little trepidation about what we might encounter in this build.

Some might find the results interesting, but the gist of it was that it was mostly positive. Here's a quick rundown :

It took us a good solid 10+ hours for this install, being our first attempt. With the complaints many purportedly had, I had taken steps to examine each component when being installed, test fitting it and visually checking to see if anything was out of spec. At the end of the build process, I only had one question ~ is that it?!

Here's a couple of pics...

^^^ Ooooh. A Spearco intercooler? Good stuff!

Name: 7.jpg
Views: 2652
Size: 32.3 KB

^^^ The Vortech kit comes with it's own windshield wiper reservoir / relocation kit. Nice! Too bad it only has a third of the stock OEM capacity...

^^^ Vortech has included 3 extra bottles of SC lube, and included more in the SC unit itself. First change @ 2500miles, then every 7500. Extra lube can be purchased approx @ $30 for a set of 3. I guess it would be ideal to change out the lube every time you do an oil change. Now the supplied 2.5 bar map sensor didn't come with any calibration specs, and when given the specs by OMNI, I didn't feel that they were close to where they should be so I elected to use one of our 3 bar sensors instead.

^^^ The customer wanted a pulley setup and that was probably the first thing that was installed.

^^^ Along with the build, I had recommended the use of Perrin's overpipe, catted frontpipe and a 3 inch resonated exhaust. All of which fit PERFECTLY. I have to applaud Perrin for their nice thick flanges and V-Band setups. I'm big on those!

^^^ Of worthy mention, in the essence of safety and longevity, he also opted to get one of the oil cooler setups which cores have recently undergone a slight revision and don't leak anymore, from my understanding. The oil cooler pictured within is purported one of the first of the new ones, hence the slight delay when getting it.

^^^ Adequate clearance as one can see, and the results were pretty apparent with lower logged engine temps in the dyno bay!

So the end result looked like this...

Name: 2.JPG
Views: 2366
Size: 69.3 KB

Name: 3.jpg
Views: 2327
Size: 47.3 KB

As it turns out, there was plenty of room for everything. Some spots were tight but there was certainly zero contact even with the hood being dropped at height...

At this point, just about THE ONLY ISSUE that I agree 100% on and see are the wing nuts that keep coming loose! I was looking for a solution to keep them in and subsequently prevent the filter intake cover from coming off when a solution presented itself! We used one of the oil cooler lines to wedge the cover in place so that it wouldn't come off. Sure, the wing nuts would rattle but the the crux of the problem is now secure...

Taken from Perrin's site :

So without further ado, here are the dyno numbers...

Keep a few things in mind here :

1) STOCK OEM Header (with Cat)
2) 2.5 Inch CATTED Front Pipe
3) 92 OCTANE Chevron Gas

Name: VortechMap1.jpg
Views: 2443
Size: 133.5 KB

^^^ That's our "default" Vortech map. It's not bad though it's clear on the logs that it's even more octane sensitive the way it is being FI and all, and you can see a little relaxing of timing past 6900 rpm here. Still, quite in line with what we've seen from previous dyno charts with 93 octane, and even smoother too.

Name: VortechMap2.jpg
Views: 2426
Size: 130.1 KB

^^^ Looking at the logs from the map before, it was evident that more timing could still be added, multiplier and knock correction were happy and without issue so we decided to add more timing and that was the result... Nope, it's not belt slip you're seeing (in this case) and while there was zero knock on the logs, it was pretty clear that it wasn't as happy and more timing was pulled from the top. Still, @ 267WHP / 205#s TQ, that's pretty nifty!

^^^ It should also be noted that both runs were conducted back to back, with about 30 seconds (ish) of cooling time in between and the more aggressive map certainly shows apparent signs of heat soak...

Name: Stock vs Vortech.jpg
Views: 2511
Size: 158.0 KB

^^^ Finally, here's what the lower run looks like when compared to a typical 6MT baseline ~ product is as advertised!

Dyno run video to follow real soon in an edit!

Cheers!

Stock BRZs and FR-Ss dyno at 173 hp on your dyno? I think that is the highest I have seen.

That's my car! Bob was fantastic to work with, and I can't be happier with the results. We walked through all the options, came up with a great plan, and Bob communicated fantastically well throughout. I'd recommend him and Drift Office to anyone.

It sounds fantastic, and is amazing to drive. My only complaint is my friends keep wanting to take it out for test drives...

I put down 175-ish on a brisk Fall evening on Mach V's dynojet with just an axleback. 161whp in 100 degree weather with the Nameless op/fp and axleback on Pure's dynojet.
