What would cause this? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Heard a noise coming what seemed to be from the driver's side front of the car. I pulled the wheel and noticed all the studs have play in the hub. Is this normal? The other side is not like this. The bolts on the back of the hub are all tight.

is that not just the rotor being a bit loose, the brake keeping the rotor from moving and the studs hitting the rotor with the little bit of play that's there?

That's just the rotor's freeplay.

Would it possibly cause the noise I am hearing? Or would the wheel snug up the free play when tightened down? If that is not the noise, then I need to keep looking.

Somebody on another thread reported that he had a loose ball joint (the castle nut was loose on only held by the cotter pin). Maybe check it out?

What's the frequency of the noise you hear? And what does it sound like?

Frequency is bumps as well moving the wheel back and forth quickly. Sounds like a light clunking noise. I will check out the ball joint and appreciate the help.

One of my friends is a mechanic and pretty sure we got it figured out. I have Whiteline adjustable end links and the jam nut on the bottom came loose. Thought I checked that because I recently lengthened them but must have overlooked it. I learned something about the hub/rotor and appreciate the suggestions.

Troubleshooting should always start with the areas you've recently changed or touched. Parts recently replaced etc.

So many times on my old 240 I'd replaced a part and had a weird issue and convinced myself that it couldn't be the new part because it was new. More times than I care to admit it was either a faulty new part or I forgot to tighten something up all the way.

Yes for sure, first thing I checked just didn't use a wrench and couldn't see it visually, i.e. "overlooked it".
