Problems with FX400 full-disk clutch after shady install... ***Help?***
I have a question for all the people out there with the FX400 series clutch from ClutchMasters...
I had a "reputable" shop install my clutch for me, and have had nothing but problems with them. I made it 60-65 miles from the shop and had a CEL come on... This puzzled me since I have yet to hear of any cars having a CEL due to anything clutch related... I stop the car and look under the hood and noticed that the two connectors on top of the bellhousing are not connected... I then figure I can just plug them in and be fine... When I find the correct wires I notice that both of them are sandwiched down in between the bellhousing and the engine... $%!@#@ So I call them up and setup an appointment with the guys to get this fixed... They do fix the problem for me by replacing the connectors with some OEM looking weatherpack connectors. Now that I can drive my car without seeing orange... I have noticed that sometimes taking off under load (uphill, u-turns, etc etc) I hear a nice clunking sound and also I can feel feedback through the pedal when it does it. Is this clunking typical for a basically stock FR-S with a high torque quick engaging clutch? Or is their potentially an issue with component alignment or mis-installation of the throwout bearing or what? Any ideas??? I'm really regretting not having installed this on my car myself.....

I'm trying to find a different shop to take it to since these jack legs can't do anything right... After doing some reading it almost sounds like I have chatter since I only hear it on take-off, but I imagine I would feel that in the car and shifter, not in the clutch pedal. Can anyone describe to me what chatter feels like?
I just hope that I haven't damaged anything...

I noticed while doing our clutch that the two small clip/springs that hold the throw out bearing to the clutch fork got easily bent when removing and that upon re-installation the bearing was loose on the fork to the point it could possibly cause feel issues/noise. We took the clips off and bent them back nice and tight, and it was good. I could see this POSSIBLY causing an issue like you are describing.
Another thing we noted in the factory service manual it specifically states to lubricate the shaft the clutch disc rides on but DO NOT lubricate the shaft that the throw out bearing rides on. In most clutch installations you lubricate the area both the disc and bearing rides on. Short of that, there isn't much to the clutch install aside from tightening all the bolts and getting the shaft splines into the disc. Installing a clutch on this car is very simple. P.S. Check to make sure the transmission mount is good and tight and that the driveshaft alignment paint mark is in the correct position. Adam |
