Brake reservoir caps color, rit dye anyone??
Was thinking of this.... I see many painting the caps under hood.. In my rc hobby to change plastic gear colors nicely and permanently I've boiled water up with rit dye in it and threw parts in pot for 5 mins, viola color change...
Anyone tried this yet? I'm thinking of it myself. All the yellow bits I don't like, red IMO would be nicer. |

Wow I had no idea this stuff existed. From what I gathered off the web the dye takes at least several hours to get a really good color in so I would definitely try this with a spare cap on hand to cover the reservoir. Do you think the heat would deform the cap?
Edit: I just saw some parts get dyed in minutes, I think I rushed that assumption about the time it takes.

Well I've done tons of RC Heli gears, both plastic, delrin, and also several rubber parts in past never an issue and the color took very fast, heat is the key, near boiling then back it off, put in the items to be rit dyed and stir steady for 5-10 minutes, constantly to avoid and disforming and melting of any parts etc.... Wear a mask and preferably use a camp stove outside as its nasty smell... and an old pot and wood spoon. You can simply take items out with the spoon to inspect as time goes on to see how it is taking the color. When its taken all its color you simply take out and rinse then let cool.
I'm almost 90% certain this should work for our bits, the rit dye is usually sold at craft stores, where women buy shinto for making blankets and clothing stuff...In a 50-100ml bottle, more rit you put in faster it will work and darker color will be basically. When I can ever get a chance to get to the city again I'm gonna get some and try at least one piece from under the hood and see how it goes, if it works it will be boss. |

Well I tried it, sad to say the plastic didn't take the dye at all, even went past normal times and a higher concentration of dye dillution as well.
Ah well.... had to try... Sigh*** SOMEONE make some anodized and colored caps for the engine bay!
