Cold Start Exhaust Volume

Now that there are numerous aftermarket exhausts available for the twins, let me ask a question. Are there any axel-backs out there that offer no drone, a nice sound when you get on it, but a cold start volume similar to the stock exhaust? I leave for work while the rest of my household is still dreaming. I had a Nameless offset for a while, and loved the sound except for the cold start. We have a drive-under garage, and when I'd fire up my FR-S to leave for work, it shook pictures on the walls upstairs.

Thanks,

SilentMike

It's highly unlikely. The loud exhaust is due to the cat warm-up strategy. Highly retarded ignition, an open throttle and appropriate fuelling makes that 'angry' noise.

Yeah, that's my fear that anything that will sound good on the street will also bark on startup. I myself dig the sound. My sleeping wife and five year old, not so much.

Perhaps you could speak to one of the tuning wizards on here and get them to write you a custom warm-up strategy which isn't so aggressive. It's only there to light the cat up as quickly as possible to meet emissions regulations for new vehicles.

Surely the gurus like of @Visconti can do this?

Now that's an interesting idea! I should be receiving my EcuTek package from MotoEast in the next couple of days. Once I get it up and working on my mostly stock (Apexi filter) FR-S, I might have to ask them about that.

Thanks for the idea!

I find your screen name ironic for the topic

In other news, I've talked to Visconti. He said startup won't be touched.

Did he say why? Perhaps EcuTek haven't located those tables/strategy? Perhaps he's not comfortable doing it? Some other reason?

No, it was a question in passing a while ago. I do notice that it's different between E85 and 93 maps.

I have an Invidia Q300, and the cold start is fairly quiet. My driveway is between my house and the neighbors, with maybe 3 feet on either side. Its not as quiet as a stock exhaust, but its not going to bother anyone on a cold start.

The startup on the Nameless Offset Axleback with the 5" mufflers is even pretty loud and that is a mellow system by itself. Super quiet idle once warm. I think the only solution is stock or something really quiet like a Q300.

I've had both the GReddy EVO3 non-silenced catback, and now the Perrin Overpipe/catted frontpipe/non-resonated catback, and startup growl on both are pretty loud and annoying (I leave before the crack of dawn as well, I'm sure my neighbors love me).

When it was just the Perrin non-resonated catback, it wasn't too bad - pretty close to stock.

Most garages are sloped away from the house. Have you tried putting it in neutral and letting it roll out of the garage before starting the car?

I've got the same issue with my Perrin non-resonated and my garage. I leave at 7am for work and my fiancee thinks it'll wake up the neighbors. From inside the car, it doesn't sound too loud, but from outside the car, the garage seems to amplify the cold-start.

If no tuner has a solution for this, I may have to switch to a resonated midpipe.
