Help! call out for TRD catback owners, need test!

Hey guys and girls,

I recently installed a TRD exhaust on my 2017 BRZ and I feel like it's very loud and I can't live with it in highway driving.

I've asked another forum member on here and about his experience with the TRD and our experiences are not matching so I'm not sure if it's a personal prospective or if I really do have a defective product.

Anyone close by St Paul MN with a TRD on his FT86 and willing to let me roll by? I'll get you coffee or lunch or something for anyone willing to help out.

Hit me up or even direct me to any member you might know of that might help. I will need urget feedback as I am planning on going back to stock if this is what a TRD really sounds like...

Take a look under the car at the flanges where the pipes join up with a LED flashlight and make sure there's no carbon buildup. Could be an exhaust leak.

TRD exhaust has a little drone apparently, but also has very mixed reviews some day theres some drone on highway others say there is no drone. Another thing is you might want to check to make sure you have no exhaust leak.

Thank you both for the exhaust leak feedback

I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow morning to check if there are any exhaust leakes.

The thing is, I'm thinking right now, if it's an exhauast leak, I should hear it somewhere in the middle right? All the noise is coming from the exit at the back.

Also, for more feedback, I have the induction small pipping into the cabin open (I tried plugging it but prefer its sound) and in my experience, the TRD is so load you cannot hear any induction sound at all coming from that pipe. As a matter of fact, you can't hear anything completely at all other than the exhaust sound coming from the back. It overwhelms the cabin, the the tire noise, the engine noise, wind noise, pratcially everyhing, it's just a huge booming sound that even makes my ears ring (I have very sensitive ears though)

I wonder what other's experience is? especialy induction sound.. do others hear induction sound?

Well the leak could be at the frontpipe to midpipe section- did you reuse the donut gasket? Or it could be where the midpipe connects the muffler towards the back check those places.

The intake induction pipe does make it a little loud in the cabin now you have an exhaust which also contributes to some noise so that could also be why you may feel its really loud. Also, exhausts are known to be loud when they are new after a few heat cycles it could tone down possibly. You should wait and drive 100 miles or so to see if it makes any difference. Just throwing out some ideas...

New exhaust systems are always a little louder, they take time to carbon up and mellow out. I never found my TRD system loud but it did have a some bass (aka drone) in city RPMs and occasionally cruising up a slider grade on the freeway.

Hmmm, maybe I'll just collect my old stock exhaust from the dealer and keep it at my place and then drive around in this TRD exhaust a bit longer to see if it quiets down or not.

But I have been told that exhausts don't quiet down with time and that this is an urban myth. In any case, I guess by this point I've already lost a lot of money on the exhaust because if I'm selling it, it'll be sold used now. So I might as well keep it for a little bit longer and see if it will indeed quiet down?

That sounds like a plan! Yea, ive heard about that carbon build up might be a myth, but who knows lol. I would just wait and break it in and see what happens. If its still loud for you you can just sell it im sure you'll find members on here willing to buy it.

well to update this thread for those reading,

The TRD exhaust is coming off next Tuesday. It's louder than I anticipated and I personally really loved that induction tube sound coming into the cabin while on highways giving it some throttle and with the TRD, that's totally gone, masked by the sound the TRD makes.

If anyone nearby Minneasota MN has a TRD exhaust I'd still want to get a ride and hear his just to rest my mind about it all.

My FRS had the TRD exhaust on it when I bought it. I didn't feel it was super loud, but it definitely had a drone to it on the highway. I've since installed a catless UEL header and now it just drones at a different RPM. If you're ever out in the western metro I'd be happy to let you check it out.

Every TRD exhaust I have driven or ridden in has been quiet with no drone. Sounds like an improper install.

Joining this thread a little late, but just wanted to describe my experience with the TRD exhaust that I had on my 2013 BRZ. I definitely had an exhaust leak, and the flanges were somewhat warped, which resulted in drone coming and going as the exhaust system warmed up. I guess my installer over tightened everything.

Half the time there was no drone and the exhaust was perfect. Just enough growl to make things fun and interesting. No drone, even on highway drives. I absolutely loved driving the car then. The other half, the drone was just unbearable, and I would curse myself for getting the exhaust. Could barely hear the radio. But then it would go away, and I would be in love again. I tried fixing the leaks, adding extra seals, re-torquing everything, but eventually I gave up. I sold the car after owning it for just over two years as I went to grad school. I just bought a 2017 BRZ, and after my past TRD exhaust experience I plan on keeping the stock exhaust. (Also a bit older now and prefer a quieter ride )
