Went to clear bra, found factory paint imperfection
So I picked up my black BRZ yesterday, and drove it home about 160 miles. We had had a big snow the day before, so the roads had some crap on them, but I was very careful not to follow close to other vehicles on the highway. I still managed to pick up a chip on the hood, and several small ones on the front bumper.
Anyway, a little touch up paint and, it will look fine with the clear bra I'm having put on. So when I pull in the installer's garage, he sprays the front of the car down, and wipes it clean to look it over with me before starting. He's very (very) anal, which is good, in my book. He pointed out some very fine scratches that I could barely see, and I wasn't worried about. The clincher though, was that he found what appeared to be dirt or some contaminant trapped in the clearcoat in the section he's going to apply the clear bra on on the hood. It's failry small, and not that noticeable, but it is raised up, and he says that if I have him proceed with the clear bra, when the moisture evaporates, it will wind up with air trapped under it. He even took a peice of clear bra and applied it to show me what it looked like wet, which wasn't too bad, but I believe him when he says it will look worse when the moisture evaporates. I don't think I can really get a good picture of it, as it's so small, and the paint is so damned reflective. He said any dealer will take care of it, since it's obviously a factory defect. However, I'm a bit leery about having somone I don't know polishing on it, and when I called the dealer, it sounds like the process is a pain in the butt, involving multiple trips in to the dealer and waiting for approval from Subaru. My installer, whom I've used before on another car, has a detailer he works with that he says does great work who he says can take it out for $50. I'm inclined to just shell out the extra bucks, and have someone do it who I know is competent, and not just hope that the local dealer has someone who knows what he's doing. I trust the clear bra installer from the work he did for me before. He's obviously a perfectionist, and I trust him on the detailer. Anyone see this type of imperfection before on a clear bra install? |

If not perfect he can level it out so you won't get the pocket in the clear bra.

Oh, this is killing me not to drive this car!!! There's so much crap on the roads right now, and two, 12" snowstorms worth of snow to melt... I just don't want to muck the front end up before I get the clear bra on, and it's taking all the will power I have not to drive it. I pulled it out this morning to clean the fenders/wheel wells where I"m going to install mudflaps tonight, and just firing it up and backing it out of the garage made it so hard not to just take off driving. After driving the BRZ yesterday, my Nissan Murano feels like a damned monster truck!
