hey my pontiac sunfire bit the dust about 4 months ago and ive been looking for something that will be enjoyable and reliable this time around.
I would love to get the fr-s but its still a ways off and i wouldnt mind waiting for the 2nd year so i could get loaded version. some of the cars ive been looking at are the mazda3, rx-8 and subi wrx. all used and around 10k. any suggestions or advice would be great. thanks! |

Are you trying to save money or just need a car to just ride around. RX-8 and the WRX are heavy gas absorbers as I'm sure you already know.
If you wanna just save whatever and put it as a DP for the FRS you could do that. I'd say Mazda 3 if thats the case.

I would suggest a cheap civic or similar to use for a few months until the FR-S comes out if that's what you really want. Minimize the amount of cash you'll lose on an interim car purchase.

Yeah i know some guys who do it where i live but in Houston the only major things you have to worry about is crazy rain and getting run over by soccer moms in SUV's other than that you are golden all year round.

Being someone who used his bike as his dd for quite a while, I highly.... don't recommend it. Even as great as the gas is, there's nothing worse than having to freeze to death or get soaked in a shower to/from work. It isn't fun sitting in the middle of a thunderstorm at a stoplight because you HAVE to be somewhere - if it's your dd though, you gotta do what you gotta do.
I drove my bike every-single-day, right up to the point where I saw a guy I knew get killed on one. Haven't touched it since (that's beside the point) - But they aren't good to rely on as your only vehicle. I had several modded turbo cars as dailys and I always ran into issues and ALWAYS regretted it. WRXs will require more maintenance and upkeep than most cars and the RX-8 will most likely always require you to have a few extra qts of oil in the car with you at all times, and be ready to spend a good bit of $ on gas for it. Get something fun and cheap that you can still enjoy. Something simple, like an S13/14 240sx. Decent on gas, and practical (not a miata or mr2) - Soon you will find other aggravations with a two seater as a dd. Then save up and get you a fun car that you REALLY want. OR have the simple dd, AND get a bike. Anyway, this is just advice from someone who has been in a similar situation before. Good luck! You'll figure it out! |

MX5. If you need a back seat, Civic. Take the money you save and put it down on the FR-S, since you can easily find either of these cars for 2-3k.

I'd do the Mazda 3. Not a fan of rotary "reliability" and turbo AWD cars have more things that could go wrong.
