Trouble getting into gear in the morning?

Every morning since I've picked up my car, I am unable to shift into a gear after starting it up in the morning, especially reverse. Anyone else encounter the same issue?

"unable" or just difficult?

It may be just because it needs warming up, as you probably already realize.
Solution: put it in reverse right after (for safety) you shut'r down or in the gear you will first want to use.

It can be a little difficult, possibly with more use it will loosen up. I have about 4500 miles on my BRZ.

It helps to push in the clutch! Lol
But really, is it just tough to get in until the car warms up? Or tough period? Ive noticed I have to let my car warm up a bit to have if shift easy, and 2nd gear always gives me grief

I constantly have 2nd gear issues sometime after it warms up. It's always clunky and sometimes grinds. Every other gear is fine

If you are in a cold climate you may want to check out the fluids forum. There are plenty of cars with Aisin trans that get very notchy or difficult to shift when cold.
It is almost always solved with using a better trans fluid.

As soon as it got into the 30s second gear was nearly impossible to use when cold.
I switched to Pentosin fluid and its a major improvement. 2nd is notchy a bit when cold but it wont fight or grind even downshifts. Also helped a bit with reverse. You have to remember from the factory they are not going to spend a ton of money on higher quality oils.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll try the 2nd gear trick when I get back home from my business trip. Just glad I'm not the only one experiencing this.

As I've stated in other threads, I myself usually let the engine warm up for a few minutes anyway. Usually till the temp gauge moves a little a bit and the engine rpms drop below 1000. The first second gear shift is a little clunky, but no grinding, and is usually fine after that.

We've seen this in subies and the new BRZ/FRS the best solution for semi-cold climates and just about anyone is to go with the Motul Gear 300 fluid for the trans and rear diffy. We stock and ship it if anyone needs it and we've had phenomenal results from it in the Subies over the years.

Had mine 1 week and have trouble getting it into reverse. What I have done is stick it in 1st and move forward a little then it seems to allow it to drop into reverse. I have been keeping extra space in front so I can do this if need be. Hope this is just because its new. Just turned 400 miles.

When downshifting, try double-clutching until the car warms up. My WRX 5 speed also had some difficulty going down a gear before it was fully warmed up.

Yes this has worked for me in 35-45 degree conditions. Just need to double-clutch into 2nd for the first couple of minutes until the transmission has warmed up.
