Total windshield washer amt?

Ran out of washer fluid today, and bought a gallon to add. Added it, and have no idea what the volume is, since it seems like it could take more.

What's the size??

Over 1 gallon... maybe 4 liters? It holds more than any car I've owned. Surprised me when I emptied an entire bottle into it one day.

Easily the biggest annoyance of my Focus is that it holds less than 1 gallon. I buy a bottle of washer fluid, and for a month after I have the remaining 1/8th of the bottle sloshing around in my trunk.

Knowing the BRZ in my future deals with this problem makes me very happy.

From what I have read regarding the 'less than one gallon capacity' of the washer fluid is that it was designed that way so that one always had an"emergency" amount left over. This 'design' attribute may vary from one car to another. OR, of course, it might just simply be because of space limitations.

I wonder if it is 4 liters. I looked again in the manual and it is not obvious. If anyone finds it, I'd love to know. Of course (if I had a spare gallon) I could add more until it overflows!

You might be enthusiastic about your new car if - you post on a forum asking your windshield washer capacity.

So I have a 3l jug and a 5l jug but I need to fill the windshield washer tank to exactly 4l or else it will explode. What to do?! :p

Actually that it has over a gallon tank surprises me. When car companies try to make a car light as possible they can go to extremes by making the bolts as short as needed, wiring harnesses with no extra slack, lightweight battery, lighter rims, etc. The easiest thing to do would be to put in a 1/2l tank for washer fluid! 4l tank - they're not even trying for lightweight! (car also has a spare tire and tools - though located at the rear and low down, so it's not a bad thing really)

But how big is the tank? Who cares. You put a gallon in. You know you have a gallon of washer fluid to use! Could have a 7 gallon tank - doesn't mean I'd fill it. 1 gallon should last you a while, even through winter.

As for the person with 1/8th a bottle sloshing around in their trunk - do you live out of your car? Can you not put it next to the windex bottle under your kitchen sink? Do you not realize you can top off the tank after you've used the washer a few times and don't need to wait until its empty to refill?

Oh, and - #firstworldproblems. :p

I believe this is a simple arithmetic challenge.

Given that the the reservoir tank is empty.
Given that the tank capacity is 4l.
Given that both containers are full totaling 8l.
Given that one has no other empty containers.
You then have have enough for two fills. (2 X 4l)

One solution would be:

Fill the tank with just about half of the 5l container and continue to fill the 5l container, little by little, with the 3l container until the three gallon container is empty. You should then have 4l in the tank and 4l in the 5l container for the next fill.

1. Fill 3L container
2. pour contents of 3L container in reservoir
3. Fill 3L container
4. Pour contents of 3L container in 5L container
5. Fill 3L container
6. Pour 3L container into 5L container until full
7. Pour remaining 1L into reservoir
8. Marvel at your problem solving skills.
