engine ticking noise at idle
Hi all, recently I've been getting this constant ticking noise at idle. Can't really tell if its present above idle as I have an aftermarket exhaust.
Doing some research such as this thread I'm really hoping that it's not rocker arm failure. However, that thread the ticking seems far more intense. Anyone had this sort of noise before/any indication of what it could be? It doesn't really sound similar to the DI crickets. It's a MY14 which I've read pre-15's have some problems with rocker arms |

Yep me too.
I would be much more worried if mine stopped making those sounds!

Agreed, sounds normal.
I reckon it's just the valve lifters indicating that they have some clearance - which is a good thing. Back in the day, with solid lifters, if you didn't have that sound after you adjusted the valves, it usually meant that they were adjusted to tight and one could expect some burnt valves on down the road. |

The rocker pivot sits in an oil galley in the head. One end of the rocker arm sits on the pivot, the other end sits on the top of the valve stem with the bucket lash adjuster in between. There is a roller in the center of the rocker which is driven by the cam. Most noise that we hear is either the DI injectors firing, or the HP fuel pump. The HP fuel pump is to the right of the oil filter(if you are facing the engine bay from the front) and is driven by 3 lobes on the intake cam. If you set your hand on it with at an idle it pulses. Rocker failure will always throw a code for a miss fire. That is if the rest of the engine doesn't let go in the process.

I reckon I got lost back in the old days when most gasoline engines had either "solid" lifters or "hydrolytic" lifters - or at least that's what we called them. Or at least that's what Bubba and I called them. NOW, I can go take a peaceful nap because at least I know what I was talken about. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ |

It doesn't ever cover all of the 13s. Just one run of them.

Nah specifically went for the 2014 and checked the VIN to make sure it avoided the recall. |

Ok thanks everyone, seems the consensus is that the sound is normal. It's just that it was never there before and only started recently.

Rocker geometry was improved in MY14 and up. The pocket for the rocker pivot is deeper, valve stem is longer.
