2017 86 Insurance Increased 70%

Hello,

I'm in the US and my car insurance is increasing by 70% ($400+) for a 6 month premium. I have not had any accidents or violations and filed 0 claims.

I was told that too many people with the same model vehicle are getting into incidents. I can understand why this would cause my premiums to raise, but not by this much.

Have any others run into the same problem? Was I lured in by an attractive price, just to have my premiums skyrocket?

That doesn't sound right, it shouldn't go up that much. I would definitely start calling around ASAP for quotes from other insurance companies.

Shop around. Unfortunately it is true that your premium is related to the driving habits of others in your region.

Again ... shop around. Progressive is pretty reasonable.

That's one of many reasons why it could increase, some cars are statistically more likely to be involved in accidents than others, and your premium can be affected by companies having increased expenses due to claims (yours or not) Insurance premiums fluctuate. Most insurance companies offer a introductory rate to entice new customers in the way of a new customer discount or something similar. Car insurance is really complicated and is based off of many factors including credit, driving record, age, gender, location, vehicle age, value, style, crash test rating etc. Your best bet is to shop around and make sure you match the coverage you have with what you're quoting. I live in CA as well and have had good luck with Geico.

I work for a major insurance company,

Interesting. I ended up saying 50 bucks by going with a BRZ Limited vs FRS. I am in SoCal, so rates are pretty high for most areas, adult driver, nothing on my record.

I had a great quote from Progressive, better than my previous one... but a couple weeks later they doubled my quote.

The next only lower quote I can get isn't really worth changing providers (<$100 /6mo). Progressive gave me a quote for 1/2 what my upcoming premium would be, but a week or two later they raised the quote to something similar.

I'm currently with Geico in CA as well. I know I'm paying more due to my age and vehicle, but this increase caught me really off guard considering I have a clean driving record that hasn't changed in the last 6 months.

I hate that they can do this. I would have paid less to insure a C5 Z06 that was pretty much the same purchase price, has no back seat, and makes twice the power. Also, I have no accident history. At a certain point, I feel like they need to ignore what other people are doing and focus on the driver that they're insuring and the risk that the car as a package presents.

Is this for your renewal or did it happen mid term?

Do you know what your credit rating is? Did it drop recently? That will affect your insurance rates more than a clean driving record will.
My credit jumped up recently and my insurance dropped so low I feel like I am the one taking advantage of them since usually the
insurance company mostly does the butthole penetrating to us. I also echo the shop around advice.

If you're with Geico, you could get 10% discount by taking this online drivers course:
http://geico.amersc.com/

I haven't tried it myself, but might be worth looking into.

Chances are, C5's are owned by older more mature drivers. Not 18 year olds who think they can drift.
