Toyota Servicing / Ext Warranty

Hey, thought i'd get people's thoughts on the maintenance side of our 86.

Given that toyota is doing fixed plan servicing is everyone jumping on that or going to separate mechanic who could be cheaper and more thorough (some dealer service is shocking)?

Also i just got mailed my "Mechanical Protection Plan" which apparently gives me free 3 years extended warranty if i keep servicing with my dealer. I'm no mechanic but looking at the coverage it seems to be minimal compared to standard/paid warranty.

I'd prefer sticking to toyota but then i don't want to get ripped off either

The "extended warranty" is always less comprehensive than the factory wrranty. Toyota build the car and warrant it for 3 years. A company that has had nothing to do with building and design of the car can't warrant everything Toyota does. It is more of a basic insurance coverage, for lack of better term. It USUALLY covers major components rather than minor things. And alot of the time it has a maximum dollar figure per claim and in total.
BUT if it's free, it's better than nothing, if you are happy to go back to that dealer for servicing.
Personally, since you asked, I will take mine to Toyota for servicing.

Yea did a bit more reading, the per claim limit is 1k to a total of 3k.
Not much if something serious does break down..

i'm just hesitant given that my last corolla was a ~$250 per basic service when you add all the consumables.
The potential saving of going with third party is significant over that 6 years.. hmm

ps: Theres also a "premium" extended warranty which covers more but of course you pay for it.

The Toyota extended Warranty is definitely much, much better than the aftermarket ones, yes. Not debating that at all.
I wouldn’t pay for a non factory warranty extension, but if it’s free, then it doesn’t cost you anything. You can always decide not to go back to the dealer and all that happens is the basic “warranty” is voided. No biggie there. If your local/trusted mechanic can do the servicing for a better price, and you’re happy with his work, then by all means go to him
