Nameless axle back legal?
I was pulled over by Sheriff in La Canada and was cited for illegally modified exhaust and excessive noise. He advised me to put stock exhaust back on. Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks. |

Emissions wise, its not illegal. But the noise is subjective. They might send you to get your car smogged and they will test the decibel level.

Isn't the TRD exhaust almost identical to the nameless?

Probably. Now I have to deal with court and an emissions check etc. Waste of time.

Yeah that guy is being a ****. It is not illegal noise wise. With stock everything else its quieter than most trucks on the road.
I rev in the high ranges on the street and it gets drowned out by any big truck or muscle car next to me. |

Do you have the muffled one....?
If not, it's plainly illegal. If so, it's really a fight you'd have to have with CHP or whichever place you want to get a sound check done unless you just want to go back to stock and do the fix-it. CHP will generally do checks for free. To the previous poster, the nameless is literally nothing like the TRD exhaust. Nameless is way, way louder. TRD is barely louder than stock but sounds nice. Nameless single exit is a pretty loud exhaust. It's not a straight pipe, but people will hear you and turn their heads if you're ever over 3000. I don't blame the cop too much, I have a nameless muffled axleback and I always get to the highest gear I can whenever I see a cop and back off the throttle. Cop doesn't know what 95 dBA sounds like, but he can be pretty sure most modified exhausts he sees will violate something. Just his job. We have a dual exit bumper and one is empty... and most catbacks aren't CARB-legal so he has a better chance than not of being right.

Also worth noting - though you can make a million arguments as to why this is stupid (it is), axle-back exhausts are, AFAIK, considered "emissions-sensitive" parts by the CARB and as such replacing or modifying them with any non-CARB exempt piece is by definition an equipment violation.
Knowing Nameless, there's a 0% chance they're going to certify their stuff with CARB. Additional edit: I know dBA is an exponential scale, but there's plenty of posts on Nameless' site and otherwise stating that this product, with otherwise stock exhaust, has failed autox noise checks (92 dBA), so 95 might not be too much of a stretch.
