people trying to drag race
I live in a small town in Oklahoma, but this weekend I'm in an almost city, Tyler tx pop about 100k. In Oklahoma no one notices the car or cares about it. Here in Tyler I've had 5 people come up next to me revving, there was a neon srt4, early 00's honda accord, late 80sblazer (the little s10based one)that def had a v8 in it, some guy in a newer impala/Malibu thing and a still paper plated is350c with the top down. I didnt race any of them i had my 4year old in the car with me, although i did some spirited driving following the lexus.
Do people that live in populated areas have this happen often? The only time I've ever seen this was when my brother and I borrowed my uncles Porsche and everyone and their mom was trying to get some. |

I grew up in New England, but I lived in southwest Oklahoma for several years; when I moved there, I had a first gen VW Jetta that was built pretty extensively, with the mods usually placing me in the older Prepared class when I autocrossed it. It was very quick and handled about as well as you can make a car handle and still keep it streetable.
No one in OK had a clue what the car was capable of, nor did they care...out there it was all about drag racing, and I think it's as much a simple byproduct of geography, as it is culture, as 99% of roads are north/south or east/west. There are very few roads where a car like that can be appreciated. And while it was very quick in a straight line as well, there really was still no comparison to an American rwd V8 car that had the basic drag reciepe applied to it. So, after a year or so of being bored because there was no autocross (at the time), few roads, and no real connection to the local car scene, I surrendered and sold the Jetta and bought a 1971 GM X body, and had a blast with it. Assuming things haven't changed THAT much since I lived there, I assume it's the same. Anyone challenging you to a drag race simply doesn't understand what the car is all about. Either that, or their car really IS slow, and they're looking for an easy win. I certainly wouldn't waste the gas to race an '86 in a straight line if I had a V8 muscle car. Unfortunately, buying a car based on power versus handling is almost always the smarter choice there, considering the primary road type, and it certainly is if you're looking for similar-minded drivers. I live in Denver CO and I will say I don't drive a ton but I have only had one high school looking kid try to race me in his honda accord before and I kept cruise control on at 4-5 over the limit. I have been along side various Subarus and such and they just kinda look over, we nod, and keep cruising down the street. I am sure they know I am not trying race an 86, they know what they are about.
Back when I lived in California I would get challenged to race every other stoplight when I had a v8 car and v8 truck. Its just a different scene out there tho too. Most of the time when I am cruising, severally over the speed limit, I just get other cars cruising with me, no one trying to race me here in CO. (yet)

The last "come race me bro" experience I had was with a chick in a tricked out Civic.
Creepy, IMO. |

I live in Tyler TX! 👍 I just got my 86 two months ago, and the same thing is happening to me, but not that often. I think the dark tint helps some.
