89 Octane Ethanol Free vs 91 10% - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Hey all, picking up my new (to me) 13 FR-S this week. Here in NE Florida we have a good supply of e-free gas, with one exception. It's 89 octane. I've been using it in my motorcycles with great results.
I know the minimum octane recommendation is 91 (US).
Is using the 89 octane e-free an option, even if maybe applying some OTC octane booster? Or should I stick with 91 octane 10%?

The car only has 22k miles, and the chirping TSB has already been taken care of. Just looking out for the future on my newly acquired investment.

I would stick to the 91 even if it has corn juice. The recommended rating is 93 the REQUIRED minimum is 91. Although you would not really hurt anything by running 89 the car will pull so much timing to prevent knock that you will take a large performance hit. Adding octane booster is not a replacement for using the proper octane in the first place.

I used 89 a few times just for the heck of it when I was in Florida. It didn't make a difference in performance to me and probably shortened the life of the engine in the long run.

Buy 93 premium and stick with it. Shell V-Power Nitro+ is a great option.

That's a big difference. It is as if you had a trillion dollars and were considered a trillionaire but now you are only a billionaire and are looked down upon and can't feed your family.

Yep, as generally recommended, use the highest octane gas available at your local gas station.

Strange. I use 93 and my timing gets pulled around 6k by a couple degrees. I couldn't imgaine 91, or even worse, 87. I'm glad our cars are capable of pulling timing, but it can only pull so much until knock happens. Even if the car seems to run fine, if you give it gas it surely won't. It fires and functions, but it won't run like it's supposed to, which can wear and damage components. I'm not sure if anyone here is aware of the spark plugs, but you do have to lift the engine to get all of them. Just an FYI, so run higher octane, i'd take 95 or even 100 if possible.

Food for thought. Ethanol has an effective octane rating of 160 in a direct injection application.

Jesus Christ, does no one read the fucking manual anymore?

In regards to the fuel pump TSB, you'll get crickets again. Here's a very simple solution, instead of worrying about the noise your pump is making (which, let's be honest, is normal operation for it) try driving your car between 4 and 7 thousand RPM more often.
