Costco or Sam's club Gas really bad?

let the marketers have their fun and watch us all go circles about standards and whatnot, the real proof is in the pudding.

when several of us logged knock and other parameters over the course of about 5 months (here in Phoenix) we discovered that brand had very little to do with the "quality" of the gas. What we all considered to be shit gas (QuikTrip, CircleK) actually ended up being the best because it was constantly being refilled.

I wish I could find the 'proof' but it's buried somewhere in this 2528-post thread....

Can contain up to, not has to contain. Also fuel that contains no ethanol can also be top tier as long as it has passed all performance testing (looked into it it's mostly about vaporization rates vs temperature) It basically says it in there that ethanol content is not what makes a fuel top tier additives and testing do so a 0% ethanol fuel that has proper additives and a proper vaporization rate would still be top tier.

If you live in Arizona, you might find this interesting, it's an excerpt from azenergy.gov. Basically, what's it's telling you is that you have no idea where your gas is from, and every station in town is selling the same great or crappy gas, depending on where it sourced from this month...

Where Does Arizona’s Gasoline come from?
Arizona’s supply of gasoline comes from two basic sources: 1) Southern California refineries;
and 2) New Mexico and West Texas refineries. Gasoline may also be delivered to Southern
California ports, for shipment to Arizona, via super tankers or barges from refineries in the
Northwest, the Gulf Coast and the East Coast, as well as from countries such as Venezuela,
Finland, and Saudi Arabia.

How Does Our Gasoline Get Here?
Gasoline is pumped from the refineries or tank-storage facilities into the interstate gasolinepipeline
system. Arizona receives almost all of its gasoline through two pipelines owned and
operated by Kinder Morgan Energy Partners (Kinder Morgan).
Kinder Morgan’s “West Line” is a 20-inch diameter pipeline that originates in Watson, California,
and travels down to Yuma, Arizona, then up to Phoenix. It takes a gallon of gasoline
approximately seven days to make that journey.
Kinder Morgan’s “East Line,” a smaller diameter pipeline, originates in El Paso, Texas, travels to
Tucson, and then on to Phoenix. It takes a gallon of gasoline approximately six days to make
that journey. There are large distribution terminals in Phoenix and Tucson, where the gasoline
is stored in large, above-ground, tanks. Gasoline trucks then fill up with gasoline, add in the
additives blended for a specific gasoline, and distribute the final products to the local gas
stations.

FYI ARCO (LOL) is also listed as a top tier gasoline provider however Sam's Club is not. For those reasons I would stay clear of Sam's Club. As noted earlier in the thread Costco is top tier gas.

I've always avoided Arco. Always get the feeling it's lower quality. Always gone with Shell, Chevron, and even 76. I have to borrow my parents Costco card to get Costco gas.

I've had my FR-S for 3 months now and filled up with Costco a handful of times. No issues whatsoever. I get moderate crickets here and there with any of my above choices.

Reading all the info people have posted reminds me of things I've read in the topic before. Gas is gas. Additives or not. I kinda see it like bottled water. Each may taste a little different, cost different, have electrolytes or minerals but it's still water.

and just like bottled water, some brands always taste like garbage, some brands always put stupid crap in it like salt, and some brands add good stuff to it, like flavored water.

If you can, sticking with TOP TIER gas is a good idea, unless it is really that more expensive.

Which is why I'll stick with my chevron and shell. Plus the occasional Costco run.

I don't really know that I trust the marketing that much. ARCO falls into "Top Tier" and many people swear up and down that ARCO is garbage and Chevron is the way to go. As others have pointed out, they may very likely be the same gas!

Be picky if you want but the factory tune on a 2015 vehicle should be able to handle the small variances you are going to get from one pump to the next. All bets are off if you put 87 octane in the car though. You could get a bad tank of gas from anywhere potentially.

If you feel better paying more for gas at Chevron and your butt dyno tells you it's better then by all means go pay .50 cents more per gallon at Chevron. I'm going to stick with Costco gas.

I don't know what Arco got in their gas, but that thing surely made my gf's Mazda feels completely gutless...😗

I don't have first hand personal knowledge with my car but everyone in my family (and friends) used Arco in the past and their cars started acting up. Don't recall what happened but when they switched back to Shell/Chevron/Costco, everything was fine and dandy again...

It's only 16 cents more at Chevron vs Arco so that equates to $1.60 at 10 gal. Wooooo
