I would assume brand standardization. I am not as up-to-date with Fords, but I think this was the engine in UK/Europe/Other markets. If that is the case, that is why you would be seeing it here now.
I think in other markets, engine displacement has to do with insurance. Therefore, if you can get the same/better performance from the same engine globally... why not.
