"Atlanta" is a big sprawling space with lots of different community types and lifestyles, I'm going to highly recommend you do the apartment thing first, and on a short lease if possible, particularly if you don't know where you will be working, and you are "particular" about the community you live in.
Make the wrong decision and you could be driving 45 minutes to work to go 5 miles or (like me) driving 45 minutes to work to go 40 miles.
