I'd only drive mine in the summer and only put about 2-3k miles a year on it (have a WRX for winter). When I had a Miata, I just changed it once a year every fall before I garaged it for the winter.  |
Oil oxidizes when sitting around, degrading from its original specification. It's just a recommendation and a good one for 0W-20.
