When you know it's wrong and you do it anyway I have little sympathy.

I'm on-board with adjusting punishments to the details... In this case I might have punished the adults severely even though "they didn't break the rules" and the kid less, but I don't know enough to be certain. Same as I might if someone were speeding to the ER with someone needing care.
