When I did mine I covered the bare metal with seam sealer. Like I smeared or to make sure everything was covered, then taped everything off and sprayed the edge with like a rubber undercoating spray. I've run into no issues so far.
And I used rivertnuts and bolts to hold the kit onto the car. I covered the rivetnut with silicone when installing them.
