I was really hoping I wouldn't have to post in this thread... but here I am.

Vehicle Mileage: 63k
Vehicle Make: 2013 Scion FR-S
Mileage After Recall Performed: 10k (1 year ago)
Symptom(s): See failures
Failure: Blew a hole in the block, which started a fuel fire.
State: CA
Is Dealership Offering Repair: Will update post if I go this route.

Was at a track day and during the cooldown lap I hear a pop, lost power, all of the warning lights came on and then I started to see smoke. Pull off to the side and that's when the flames started being very visible. Luckily the safety crew was there quickly to put the fire out, so it was contained to the engine bay.

It looks like there was collateral damage with a fuel line when the block decided to blow up, which is what fueled the fire. The car still smells strongly of fuel.

Does anyone have advise on next steps if I want to see if the valve recall was the culprit? I want to take the oil pan off myself to inspect the pickup, but I'm doing more research if it needs to be done by a dealer or documented in a certain way to be used as proper evidence. If I can get things fixed or compensated by Toyota, that would be ideal. Any advice from anyone who has gone through the process would be appreciated.


My car has been completely stock, except for an oil cooler, so boost isn't part of the equation. I used Motul 300V which gets swapped out every 3 or so track days (3k-5k miles), so improper oil or levels shouldn't have been an issue.
