You should be using something like this:

Work from the front of the black cover (facing the front of the car), you should be able to pull it upward enough with your fingers to fit the tool under. Then just insert the tool and pry straight upwards.

I've pulled both of mine 3 times now (and again on my buddies' car) with that tool without issue. You can get them for next to nothing at harbor freight or amazon.
