Because "Toyota", basically. If a typical Toyota shopper had taken an unchanged but T-badged FR-S for a drive, I think it would have been "nice car, way to noisy and crude though". It had to go upscale a bit, either real or perceived.
The 86 is a "nicer" car, I'm not sure it's "better". I dearly loved the FR-S, same with the 86 now.
