v8 BRZ/FR-S?

Oh my...

Lexus has unwrapped the third car to be developed by its skunkworks F performance division. Following in the footsteps of the IS F and the LFA, the RC F Coupe is a V8-powered high-performance version of the RC Coupe that debuted at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Show back in November.

Unfortunately, Lexus has not yet released much in the way of hard numbers, but they have said that the RC F will be their most powerful V8 performance car to date. With 420 hp, the IS F was no slouch, so it's not unreasonable to expect a figure closer to 500 hp for the RC F. The engine will likely be a massaged version of the 5-liter V8 from the IS F mated to the same slightly nutty eight-speed Sport Direct Shift Transmission.

On the outside, the RC F is a kinetic riot of creased surfaces and flared wheel arches. We might even be getting used to Lexus' bizarre spindle grill. Like the IS F, the hood is noticeably higher in order to give the larger V8 ample headroom. The sculpted front bumper helps triage airflow to the brakes, engine, and over the top of the car, and the front quarter panels feature vertical air outlets aft of the front wheels, which are also reminiscent of the IS F. The trademark stacked tailpipes also make an appearance, and a speed-sensitive active rear spoiler is mounted on the rear deck.

Lexus is clearly taking direct aim at the BMW M4 and the next Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe with the RC F. We should be learning much more about the RC F next week at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.
