The tranny is engineered to continously deal wit 200 ft/lbs of force. I don't think my hand, or an oversize shift knob, is going to reduce its longevity.

I could certainly understand not using the shifter as a hand rest from a safety perspective as you might accidently pull or push the selector out of or into another gear. But to cause serious damage to a component, always seemed a bit far fetched to me. However after hearing it so many times on the internet it seemed to be the truth.
