I'm pretty sure you are right. In my mind, I was imagining something more propriety looking like the Mazworks, which for all I know, could be used with stock shifters or short shifters:
It has been a while since my transmission was out of the car or since I had a look at a picture, but you are right. It looks like they could make a custom carrier without welding or anything that accomodates the stock shifter or something like the IRP shifter. Specifically, this long rod could be replaced with a shorter rod:
