Different accelerator pedals: production vs pre-production?

I've seen two different types of accelerator pedals used on the 86/BRZ twins. My guess is that the type shown in the first picture is the type found on pre-production cars, and the latter is the production spec.

This is the accelerator found on the UK-spec Toyota GT-86, at least according to Toyota.co.uk:



However, if you look at the accelerator pedal on Pekingduck's production FR-S, he has a different, less-sporty kind:



The same is true for the BRZ. If you look at this picture from what I assume is a preproduction BRZ, you can see the same accelerator pedal as the one in the GT-86 above:



But this image shows the newer type:



Does anyone know what's going on here?
