I think it depends. Agree it's definitely the cheapest option, but on my mk6 GTI, the brake-based brake vectoring system (VW calls it "XDS") is pretty good on the street at stock power levels and especially with decently sticky tires. It's seamless and a noticeable improvement over most FWD open-diff cars. Mk5 GTI is a great comparison since it's nearly the same chassis, but pre-XDS.
Where I find XDS struggles is on the track, where it quickly puts a ton of heat into the brakes. Once that happens, the brakes start to go and the power-on understeer increases. But I don't really hold that against the XDS system since track driving is outside the scope of intended use.
All things equal, I'd definitely rather have XDS than go without it.
