Existed and common are not the same. Calling a hatch a "five door" is relatively a new term. Even when it was used it was usually 5 door hatchback not just 5 door.

Funny nobody has mentioned lift backs yet. Once upon a time it was a more common designation than even hatch was. Especially with Toyota.
