AFAIK the ecu hardware is same for all ecu 2012-2016 regardless if auto/manual or which country. I have not tested every combination but done a few now no problems.
The ECU will always accept the rom as flash devices flash the same area 7ffff-13ffff hex and the roms are all same size.
Assuming you using opensource tools like tactrix/KESS V2 you wont have any issues.
If you using ecutek brzedit or other licienced/locking tools then the problems will be due to the liciencing and locking not the ecu itself.
you will still need to sync the ecu into security as per first post.
we have got usa manaul ecu and used it in australian Auto car no problem.
even the 2017 ecu is likely same i just havent had to swap one yet
