My car lives under a giant gross tree that shits leaves, sap, artillery fungus, bird shit, and tons of dust from all the dry leaves breaking apart. The engine bay is full of leaves and insect husks get in every nook and cranny as well. I'm sure a bunch comes from underneath but for me most of it is from above in my case.
