For all we know, Toyota dollars could have been the majority of the capital investment in the 86/BRZ production line. Subaru might not need excess production capacity for their existing/future models and idling the 86 line might simply mean less dollars in Subaru's coffers.

I don't think Toyota execs stormed Subaru's headquarters with a squad of Yakuza enforcers in tow to compel them to continue building cars.

Of course it's all just speculation that the model will continue, regardless of who's badge is showing on the bumper anyway.
