The tires on your Trans Am had taller sidewalls. The taller the sidewall, the narrower the recommended wheel width range will be for a given tire width. For a 245/40/17, the allowed wheel width range is typically 8 to 9.5 inches. So while it will technically "work" on an 8 inch wheel in the sense that it will physically mount, it's pinched down on narrowest wheel possible which is not optimum for handling. The same 245 would be much happier mounted on a 9 inch wheel, which is why it's such a common setup in STX.
