The WRX/STi have always had a sort of agricultural or industrial look to them. It was part of their charm. Cladding aside the new WRX just looks like a plain old sports sedan no different that myriad others on the road, including BMW! The cladding does not appeal to many but it is the only defining feature now.
Only comparing in the sense that BMW would never do something silly like putting black plastic fenders on their sedans. (Honestly, is there any brand out there at all that puts plastic fenders on their sporty sedans?)

And yes, I somewhat agree that the WRX has never been spectacular, but if the "only defining feature" of a new model is some SUV-ish plastic, then clearly someone somewhere dropped the ball.
