I have tried eliminating the rattle and it doesn't seem to matter. I think a lot of it comes from the shift linkage going into the shifter. The IRP uses a metal bushing, the stock shifter and the STI short shifter use a plastic bushing. I was going to try some nylon washers in there to try to see if it tames the noise a bit next time I am under the car.

Yes, the IRP is quicker. Not just the throw is helpful, but being taller and closer to the wheel it is easier to grab.
