It's better to solder and heat shrink them than T-tapping, you might run into shorting issues if water gets introduced to the wiring. 18AWG is fine too, just make sure you get the multiple stranded wire, there is also a single wire but you don't want that one. And I am going to assume you have a BRZ, so that is as far as I can go with my advice! I hope I helped a little bit!
