Do we actually have any proof of say a 4.88 geared AT car against a 4.3 MT car?

Considering the manual has less transmission losses the FI debate can deff be argued.

Additionally, just know that when you are "shifting" with the paddles, you are simply requesting a shift to the TCU. You aren't actually shifting it "manually", but that's just semantics.
