+1 on radroach's post...

Get underneath it and do a visual inspection of the shifter mount bushing as well as the transmission mount and replace if these are worn or have excess movement. There are some aftermarket parts that can help with the crunch and other parts that hurt. I found whiteline transmission mount bushing and shifter bushing to be helpful with the second gear crunch. Most of the time the noise is the TOB, as mentioned. If you're hearing it then its likely causing some friction and should get in there and replace it. These are just my experiences though, I could be completely wrong.
