I think it's more the quality of the fuel that's causing it. Cheap white brand leftovers will have more polluted fuel than the more expensive brands.
The Americans also have 89AKI (something like 93RON) and winterblend fuel and other crapfuel like that.

Most of the time I refill my gastank at BP and only use RON98.
But last week I had to stop at some local gasstation and filled it up with "Super plus" and unfortunately i'm hearing crickets under the hood the last three days.
Maybe it's caused by the combination of bad fuel and the "hot" weather the past days in the Netherlands?
I hope they will be gone after after the next refill
