But then it comes down to getting the power to the ground which is more difficult in our light cars due to tire size constraints.

But....it isn't. You are only considering the peak HP and weight. You aren't taking in to account gearing, transmission gearing, tires, torque (at all apparently) etc..... There are way too many variables. Even these 280 HP twins with superchargers and turbo kits aren't running like there peak HP and weight suggest they should.
