All cars are moving away from knobs and physical controls, which can suck because user interfaces can be lame and can be harder to operate than knobs. What is worse is when the screen fails, and then the features can't be adjusted because their are no knobs. This is why they are putting both for now, but the future is what Tesla is doing.
As far as design, it isn't pretty, but a tablet up high is better than down low. Maybe when autonomous cars become more of a standard and the reliability is virtually flawless then the screen will be moved lower and integrated with the dash because taking your eyes off the road won't be an issue. For now, this design seems better to me. It allows for a cheaper vehicle, and it allows for a control unit that is easily replaceable if it fails, which is probably cheaper to replace/reproduce than something that is integrated.
